Rick Whittaker is Chief Technology Officer at SDTC and founding Vice President of Investments. Over the past ten years, Mr. Whittaker has helped SDTC grow from its initial $100M to over $1B in funds under management, leveraged by an additional $1.9B in private sector capital. Mr. Whittaker led the development and implementation of the SD Business Case™ methodology which has been used by SDTC, the industry and government, to define key priorities for investment and policy. Mr. Whittaker sets the priorities and performance benchmarks for the portfolio which have led to an unprecedented 14 times social and economic return for every dollar invested by the Federal Government.
During his career in technology investment, Mr. Whittaker has led initiatives in product development, and managed several advanced technology investment programs. He invented and founded the “Signaling Gateway”—a critical component in enabling the transition of telecommunications utilities to new internet-based business models. He has initiated several patents on these technologies, which are in production today. Mr. Whittaker has applied his experience in transitioning industries to help transform global industry approaches using cleantech.
In addition to managing a portfolio of over 250 companies, Mr. Whittaker has personally launched, built and transitioned four of his own start-up companies. He has been consistently recognized as a motivational leader, holding executive positions in engineering, business development, strategic corporate investment, and venture capital investment for companies including BCE Capital, Everest Partners, Nortel Networks, APN, West Carleton Meeting Centre, and AirShare.
Mr. Whittaker has a Bachelor’s degree in Applied Sciences from the University of Waterloo with an option in Management Science.
