Marty Janowitz is Vice President, Sustainable Development at Stantec. He has more than 25 years’ experience consulting nationally and internationally in environmental and sustainability policy, planning, and stakeholder education and engagement in both the private sector and for community, provincial, national and international clients. He was a pioneer in the development of community sustainability planning processes utilizing a broad range of traditional and innovative techniques to host community and programmatic visioning, mission statements and strategic plans. He has been trained in and hosted innovative participatory processes employing World Café, Art of Hosting, Pro-Action Café and social media and he is one of Canada’s few experienced practitioners of classical scenario planning which he has applied to challenges as diverse as energy, climate change and seniors’ strategies. In 2012 he was selected as a member of Canada’s first prestigious Clean 50 – advancing the nation’s evolution to sustainable development and clean technologies
Marty’s work in the sphere of sustainable community planning included design and facilitation of the Federation of Canadian Municipalities’ national Needs Assessment on Municipal Capacity Building for Sustainability, the foundational report upon which FCM developed its Integrated Community Sustainability Plan (ICSP) protocols. He directed and/or led the engagement programs for numerous ICSPs and recently, the Kings Vision 2050 sustainable planning initiative which encompassed 5 municipal units, 7 unincorporated villages, and multi-jurisdictional agencies encompassing waste, transit and infrastructure services. He has led a wide range of planning and public engagement programs related to sustainability planning in renewable energy, climate change adaptation, urban renewal and environmental assessment or policy. Marty has an internationally recognized leadership role in the sphere of integrated sustainable infrastructure. He serves on the Sustainable Infrastructure Advisory Board (at the Harvard Graduate School of Design) and is Chair of an Institute for Sustainable Infrastructure’s (ISI, Washington D.C.) Technical Committee. He is one of Canada’s first credentialed consultants (ENV SP) in the ISI Envision™ Sustainable Infrastructure planning and evaluation framework and is one of only three Canadian Envision™ Verifier and Approved Trainers.
Earlier in his career he served as Executive Director of Clean Nova Scotia, where he and led a series of pioneering consultative and participatory initiatives. Marty is responsible for leading Stantec towards becoming an exemplary model of sustainability in all its facilities and operations and leads the company’s initiatives to develop a progressive, integrated sustainability consulting practice drawing on all the firm’s professional services and capabilities.
