With an insightful, ‘big picture’ perspective on all aspects of urbanism from land use policy to streetscape design, Harold recently joined Stantec as Senior Principal and Urban Places Canada Lead. Headquartered in Downtown Toronto, Urban Places is a multidisciplinary studio and centre of excellence that is dedicated to advancing best practices in placemaking in conjunction with urban infill, regeneration, and retrofitting opportunities within built areas across Canada. Harold is ideally suited to lead Urban Places given his over 20-years of urban planning and urban design experience, in the private and public sectors, as well as on projects in almost every Canadian province and territory.
Prior to leading Urban Places, Harold was Director of Urban Design for the City of Toronto, where he was charged with leading the largest section in the Planning Division comprised of nearly 80 staff working in Civic Design, Heritage, Graphics/Visualization and the four district Urban Design Development Review units. Prior to being appointed Director, Harold held a number of key positions in prominent Toronto based firms, where had led numerous large-scale, multi-faceted and visionary projects across Canada and abroad. Over the 16-years of private practice, Harold developed a respected expertise and received numerous awards for master planning, revitalization, intensification and urban design strategies and guidelines for a variety of contexts and scales, including campuses, downtowns, corridors and waterfronts.
Harold was also a part-time faculty member at the School of Urban and Regional Planning at Ryerson University; visiting panelist and speaker at a number of other Canadian Universities; original charter member of the Council on Canadian Urbanism; and, he sat on the Design Review Panels for the City of Vaughan, City of Toronto, Waterfront Toronto and the Toronto Community Housing Corporation.
