Daniel ‘Tuba’ D’Souza is currently the Founder of HacktheCity and the Vice President (Finance) & CFO of the McMaster Students Union.
Concerned with the disconnect between McMaster students and the Hamilton community, Daniel created a pilot program called ‘HacktheCity’ one year ago in partnership with IBM, Siemens, Hatch Ltd. and the City of Hamilton where 100 undergraduate, masters, and Ph. D students spent two months creating solutions to some of the most pressing issues that the city is facing. In its first year HacktheCity secured over $35 000 in funding; created partnerships with 26 different global, national, and municipal government/corporate partners; and resulted in the creation of variety of innovative ideas and new businesses tackling problems that are currently inhibiting city growth – one of which is currently working with IBM and Hamilton Health Sciences to develop an early-warning system for high risk high-cost users of the health care system downtown Hamilton.
During the daytime Daniel represents over 22 000 undergraduate students at McMaster University as the Vice President (Finance) of the McMaster Students Union – a 15 million dollar non-profit and leader in both federal and provincial post-secondary advocacy. This year, Daniel and the rest of the Board of Directors carry the goal of an increased focus on talent retention and the integration of undergraduate students into Hamilton’s rapidly growing economy.
