Brian Bentz is the President and CEO of PowerStream Inc., an energy company that provides power and related services to more than 375,000 customers residing or owning a business in communities located immediately north of Toronto and in Central Ontario.
Brian has played a pivotal role in the growth of PowerStream from its creation following the merger of three local electricity distribution companies in Markham, Richmond Hill and Vaughan in 2004, to the acquisition of Aurora Hydro in 2005, the 2009 merger with Barrie Hydro and the 2012 partnership with the Town of Collingwood in the ownership of ‘Collus PowerStream’. PowerStream is jointly owned by the Cities of Barrie, Markham and Vaughan.
PowerStream’s growth as an energy company, including the establishment of an energy services affiliate, the building of a solar generation business and the organization’s commitment to environmental stewardship with Brian at the helm, has resulted in recognition and accolades from several industry and business organizations for both PowerStream and himself. In 2015, the Canadian Solar Industries Association presented him with a ‘Game Changer Award’ in the category of ‘Solar Industry Leader’. The previous year, Electricity Human Resources Canada named Brian ‘Leader of the Year’ and the Electricity Distributors Association presented him with the ‘Chair’s Citation’ for his many contributions to the industry. Among the many honours earned by PowerStream under his leadership, the company has been named one of Canada Greenest Employer (2015 and 2014), one of ‘Greater Toronto’s Top Employers’ (2015, 2014, 2013 and 2012) and in both 2014 and 2012 was presented with a ‘Canada Award for Excellence’ by Excellence Canada (see next page for full list).
Also under Brian’s leadership, PowerStream in 2008 completed the construction and took occupancy of an energy-efficient head office facility in Vaughan, which was the first office building in York Region and, at the time, the largest in Ontario to achieve a LEED® (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) gold certification rating from the Canada Green Building Council. An operations centre later built in Markham also achieved LEED gold certification.
Brian has assumed an active leadership role within the energy industry. He is currently the Chair of the Independent Electricity System Operator (IESO) Stakeholder Advisory Committee, Vice-Chair of Collus PowerStream’s Board of Directors and is a member of the Board of Directors of the Canadian Electricity Association, the Ontario Energy Association, the Electricity Distributors Association, the Electrical Safety Authority and its Human Resources & Investment and Audit Committees. He formerly served as Chair of the Ontario Energy Association, the Electricity Distributors Association, the MEARIE Group and the Ontario Power Authority Stakeholder Advisory Committee
